Control Schemes
There are effectively two separate controls schemes available to you: the one shown on the left, commonly referred to as a WASD control scheme, and the one on the right, which uses the arrow keys for steering.
It really just comes down to whether you're more comfortable steering with your right or left hand. The opposite hand is then used for jumping and using bonuses.
Advanced controls not shown on the diagram at the bottom of the screen:
- V and J can be used for Gas
- C and K can be used to activate your bonus.
- X and L can be used for Brake
Jumping
You can jump (with the space bar) to prevent slow-down over the rough. This is especially useful on levels where you are forced to go over rough for a short period, or where there is a shortcut that goes over rough. Jumping does not prevent you from activating a boost.
Drifting
You can get into a drift by gaining enough speed, and jumping into a turn. Drifting will let you get around tight corners much more efficiently (if done correctly), but can also get you into trouble - slamming you into the rough. Learning how to drift efficiently is the key to doing well in UD.
Boost Stripes
On the ground there are blue boost stripes that give a boost that maxes out at a percentage of your kart's maximum speed. The amount of that boost that you receive depends on the angle you hit the boost at. If you hit it straight-on, you'll get the maximum boost, but hitting it from the side will get you next to nothing.
Bonuses
UD currently has three bonuses available. In multi-player, all three can be obtained randomly from bonus boxes throughout each track. In single-player, one Boost bonus is given at the beginning of each lap, to help get through slow sections or recover after a wipe.
- Boost - The boost gives you a quick boost of speed when used. The amount of boost given is equal to hitting three boost stripes on the ground straight-on.
- Fireball - Firing a fireball at an enemy will stop them dead in their tracks - if you hit them!
- Shield - Protects you from Fireballs. It wears off after you are hit with one fireball, or 20 seconds passes.
